The most important rule for the first 48 hours after Botox, Daxxify, Xeomin, or Dysport is simple: don’t rub or massage the treated areas. It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your placement and keep your result on track. And if you came in for a lip flip plus Dysport (a combo we do a lot), this matters even more because people naturally touch their face without realizing it.

Our returning-client neuromodulator appointments run about 45 minutes, and we often treat the same extensive areas you’ve done before, like forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, eyebrow lift, lip flip, gummy smile, chin dimpling, jaw slimming, Nefertiti lift, TMJ, hyperhidrosis, and neck bands. We also review how you did last time and adjust based on what you want now. That’s a big reason people tell us their results finally look “exactly what I was hoping for.”

The first 4 hours + first 48 hours: the rules that protect your tox

Quick checklist: Stay upright for 4 hours. Don’t rub or massage. Skip strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid heat, sun, pools, and saunas for 48 hours. Ice is your friend for bruising.

Right after you leave our Downtown St. Charles office

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours. No lying down for a nap, no laying flat on the couch.
  • Hands off. Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the injection sites. That includes facial tools and vigorous cleansing.
  • Keep pressure off treated areas. If you had forehead or glabella treated, try not to press your face into a pillow later that night.

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid sweat, heat, and alcohol

We generally recommend no strenuous exercise for 24 hours. That means no heavy lifting, HIIT, long runs, or anything that has you overheating and flushing hard. Saint Charles summers get hot and humid fast, and even a “quick walk” can turn into a sweaty situation, so keep it easy.

Skip alcohol for 24 hours and hold off on blood-thinning supplements for that same window unless your prescribing doctor told you to take them. Alcohol and certain supplements can make bruising more likely, especially around delicate areas like crow’s feet or a lip flip.

For 48 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and pool or hot-tub time. If you’re planning around a farmers market morning or a summer festival in downtown St. Charles, schedule your treatment so that your 48-hour window isn’t spent in the sun, sweating, and standing in heat.

Days 3 to 7: what’s normal, what to watch, and when results show up

A little tenderness, small bumps at injection sites, or a small bruise can happen early on. Most of the time, those calm down quickly. If you’re a returning patient, you probably already know your usual “tox timeline, ” and we still like to keep your first week simple so you don’t accidentally mess with a good thing.

Timing note: Botox and Dysport often start showing in a few days. Daxxify can have a different onset and can last longer for some people. If your timeline feels off compared to past visits, let us know so we can talk it through.

Keep these habits for the first week

  • Be gentle with your face. Think: normal skincare, not aggressive scrubbing.
  • Protect your skin from sun. In summer, that means planning around patio time or long walks along the Fox River so you don’t bake in peak heat.
  • If you’re commuting from Geneva, Batavia, or South Elgin, keep a simple plan for the day after your appointment. Low stress and low sweat tends to equal less bruising.

Makeup, cleansing, and the “peeling chemical peel” question we hear a lot

Gentle cleansing is usually fine the same day, just keep it light and avoid pressing hard over injection points. For makeup, we recommend waiting 24 hours before heavy makeup, and definitely skip anything that involves a lot of rubbing, like intense blending or setting sprays applied aggressively.

About chemical peels (including a TCA chemical peel or glycolic chemical peel)

If you’re also planning a chemical peel, ask us about spacing. A peeling chemical peel, especially a trichloroacetic peel, can make skin more reactive for a bit. We’ll help you plan the order and timing so you’re not stacking irritation on top of fresh injection sites.

If you booked around an Arcada Theatre show or a downtown St. Charles weekend event, it’s totally doable. We just want you to keep the first day simple so you’re not rushing to get ready, overheating, and applying makeup in a hurry.

Bruises, tiny bumps, and when you should reach out to us

If you get a bruise, use a cold compress for the first 24 hours in short intervals. Don’t press hard. Just light, steady cooling. Some people like arnica or topical vitamin K. If you want to add either, let us know and we’ll tell you what we generally see work well with your skin.

A small bump at an injection site can happen early on. Most of the time it settles. Don’t massage it. If something looks unusual, send us a message so we can guide you quickly. People tell us they appreciate that we don’t rush appointments and we stay responsive after, especially if you’re new to tox or you’re coming back after a long gap.

"Her communication is always prompt and thorough."

Reach out the same day if you notice:

  • Severe swelling, spreading redness, or increasing pain
  • Shortness of breath, hives, or anything that feels like an allergic reaction (seek urgent care if needed, then let us know)
  • New or worsening asymmetry that concerns you as the days go on

If you’re squeezing this in around work or a Randall Road commute, we get it. Send your question when it pops up. We’d rather answer something small early than have you worry all weekend.

Stay upright for at least 4 hours after your injections. That means no lying flat, no face-down massage, and no long nap on the couch right after you leave. It helps protect placement and supports an even result.

We generally recommend skipping strenuous exercise for 24 hours after Daxxify (and the same goes for Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport). Light activity is usually fine, but avoid heavy sweating, overheating, and anything that spikes your heart rate hard during that first day.

Gentle cleansing is usually fine sooner, but wait 24 hours before heavy makeup. If you do wear makeup after that window, apply it lightly and avoid rubbing or pressing hard on the treated areas.

Skip alcohol for 24 hours after Botox or Dysport. Alcohol can increase the chance of bruising, especially around areas like crow’s feet or the upper lip for a lip flip.

Use a cold compress in short intervals during the first 24 hours for bruising. Don’t press hard and don’t massage a bump. If a bump, redness, swelling, or tenderness seems to worsen instead of settle, reach out so we can guide you.

Ask us about timing before you schedule it. A peeling chemical peel can make your skin more reactive for a bit, and we don’t want to stack irritation on top of fresh injection sites. We’ll help you space your appointments so both treatments heal well.

A TCA chemical peel (trichloroacetic peel) is a stronger peel, so timing matters. Reach out with your treatment dates and what areas you’re treating, and we’ll help you plan spacing so your skin isn’t overly sensitive while your neuromodulator is settling.

Glycolic chemical peels are often gentler than deeper peels, but they still exfoliate and can increase sensitivity. Tell us what you’re considering and when you had your injections, and we’ll recommend a safe schedule for your skin.
