First Follow up After Injectables: What to Expect & Prepare

One of my favorite compliments is from a nurse injector who told me she’s “very critical and extremely selective” about where she goes, and she still wouldn’t go anywhere else for her tox and lip filler. If you feel a little nervous about your first follow up, that’s normal. Most people are worried they’ll be told something’s “wrong, ” or they’re not sure what questions to ask, or they’re afraid they’ll look picky bringing up tiny details.

Here’s the truth. A follow up after injectables is usually quick and straightforward. I’ll review your photos, check how everything settled, look for symmetry, and make sure you’re healing well. If a minor touch-up makes sense, we’ll talk it through. If it doesn’t, I’ll tell you that too. My goal is for you to leave feeling clear, reassured, and confident in your results, not rushed or pressured.

Before your follow up in Geneva: 5 things I want you to bring

My follow up appointment is scheduled as a 30-minute, no-charge visit. It’s designed to protect your results and your peace of mind. And prep is usually simple.

• Photo ID, just in case we need it for your chart.
• Your medication and supplement list (and any allergies). Even “normal” things can matter.
• A short notes list of what you’ve noticed since treatment. Think: “this side feels stronger, ” “this line still shows when I smile, ” or “I bruised here.”
• A couple of selfies you took at home when you felt like the results looked best or most uneven. Lighting at home can reveal details differently.
• A reference photo if you have a specific goal (especially helpful for lip shape or facial balancing work).

Inside the follow up appointment (step-by-step, no surprises)

When you arrive, I’ll bring you back and we’ll start with a quick check-in. People tell me they appreciate being taken back promptly and not sitting around waiting, because follow ups should feel easy. I’ll ask what you’re loving, what you’re unsure about, and if anything felt off during healing.

1) We review goals and “real life” results

I want your honest feedback. If you were nervous about looking overdone, say that again at your follow up. I’m known for keeping results natural. One client put it perfectly, they felt refreshed, “but not like I ‘had work done.’” That is the standard I keep in mind when we evaluate your results.

2) Photos and facial movement checks

I’ll take a look at photos and then I’ll have you animate. Raise your brows, smile, purse your lips, whatever matches what we treated. This is how I check symmetry and how the product settled. It’s also where I can spot tiny things you might not have words for yet. Clients regularly tell me I’m thorough and that I explain everything clearly. I’ll tell you what I’m seeing and why it matters.

3) Healing and side effect check

Bruising or a little tenderness can happen with injectables. Small lumps or unevenness can also show up early and then soften as swelling resolves. Your follow up is where I sort out what’s normal “settling” versus what needs attention. I’d rather you ask than sit at home spiraling.

4) Minor touch-ups, only when they truly make sense

If a minor adjustment is appropriate, I’ll explain what I’d change and what result it should create. Sometimes the best plan is no changes and a little more time. I’m very upfront about realistic results and I don’t “sell” touch-ups just to do more. People come back to me because they feel listened to, not pushed.

After the follow up: what’s normal, what’s not, and when I want to hear from you

Most follow ups don’t require special aftercare. You’ll go right back to your day. If we do a minor touch-up, you might have a little tenderness at an injection site, or a tiny bump that calms down as swelling resolves.

I generally recommend you keep the rest of the day simple. Skip aggressive rubbing or pressure directly on treated areas. If you’re heading to an Arcada Theatre show or walking Main Street in the Downtown St. Charles historic district along the Fox River, that’s fine, just keep your hands off the area and let it settle.

I want you to reach out to me right away if you have persistent pain, significant swelling, fever, worsening redness, or anything that feels unusual for you. Those are the moments where I’d rather hear from you sooner than later.

Here’s a small thing that makes a big difference. Don’t wait until your follow up to remember what bothered you on day 3 or day 7. Put a note in your phone the moment you notice something, even if it seems tiny. That’s how we have a productive 30 minutes instead of a vague conversation.
